Vivenne Westwood/LFW -- already perfect for Halloween

It’s Friday, and the last day of September – and time to start thinking seriously about your Halloween costume. In this week’s blog, we showed you some of the wild, weird, and un-wearable looks that sashayed down the runway in London and New York during Fall Fashion Week. You could always use some of those as the basis for an…unconventional Halloween look. Check it out if you missed it.

Or, you could grab a Variety Kit  like Animal Instincts  or Natures Glory  or create your own Custom Kit  of some of ColorOn’s avante garde looks, and make your eye makeup your costume.

We’ll post to the blog, Facebook, Twitter and send out an e-blast the minute they’re available!

She’ll be watching her mailbox next to see what beautiful surprise we send her. We’re encouraging our Winners Circle members to post their experiences on our Facebook Fan Page  once they’ve had time to play with their new makeup, so that all of you get the benefit of real feedback on the products. We’re a community, and it would be great if you shared your tips and tricks with everyone else!

Fendi's Silver Leaf Eyes

Normally we take this chance to show you some great new looks from the runway and how you’ll be able to create the same for yourself using ColorOn…Professional instant eye shadows. And we promise to do so next week. But there were so many “NO WAY!” makeup looks that came down the runway in New York and London that we had to do a post and collect some of the most cringe- and laugh-worthy here for your pleasure. And the “winners” are…

Fendi: Gold and silver leaf on the eyelids. Once reserved for gilding wood, someone thought it would look great gilding models’ eyelids. It doesn’t appear the makeup artists even tried to have it conform to the contours of the lids – you know, like actual gilding. In a word, nope.

Prabal Gurung's "Ombre" Lips

Prabal Gurung's Beautifully Awful Lips

Prabal Gurung's Beautifully Awful Lips

Prabal Gurung: The theory behind the beautifully awful lipstick look created by MAC’s Charlotte Tilbury was an “ombré effect” created by layering shades of hot pink and purple to accent the florals that filled Gurung’s collection. Tilbury said she wanted the lips to look like “an orchid bursting from within.” They look like they were perhaps sucking on black lollies or covering up a punch in the mouth with bright pink lippy. You just expect their teeth to be dark purple as well. Ick.

Richard Chai, Blue Lips

Mary Katrantzou and Richard Nicoll, Blue Lips

Mary Katrantzou and Richard Nicoll, Blue Lips

What’s with the Blue? At Richard Chai, Richard Nicholl, and Mary Katrantzou, models sported various shades of blue…lips. Three different designers could be called a trend. It’s beautifully applied, but it still makes these gorgeous girls look like animated corpses. So, no.

Jeremy Laing's Orange Look

Costello Tagliapietra's More Orange Look

Costello Tagliapietra's More Orange Look

And the Orange? Jeremy Laing and Costello Tagliapeitra showed models in bright orange makeup in varying degrees of coverage. Fashion writers were not kind, but this is one trend, when applied in a more realistic way, that could actually be flattering. We’re not ready to totally dismiss this as a possibility.

Julien McDOnald's RED Look

Julien McDOnald's RED Look

Would You Prefer Red? Editors LOVED this look at Julien McDonald, but realistically, is anyone but a runway model going to look fierce in this all-red look? Or will we just look ridiculous? One could, however, use it as the basis of a fabulous Halloween look…

Meadham Kirchhoff, a Gorgeous Mistake?

Meadham Kirchhoff, a Gorgeous Mistake?

Meadham Kirchoff: What is going on in London? Honestly, the colors here are gorgeous; it’s the application that landed them in this week’s blog instead of next week’s. We don’t see anyone applying periwinkle shadow into their brows, turquoise to their brow bone down to the crease, and then a bright pink shadow to their lids and under the lower lash line (the “pinkeye” effect) – and topping it off with crimson matte lipstick.

Vivienne Westwood, as expected

Vivienne Westwood, as expected

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood: Meadham Kirchoff is likely trying to compete a bit with England’s most famous – and most famously avante garde – designer, Vivienne Westwood. Of course the makeup is un-wearable, but it is beautiful in its own way.

Rodarte's Panda Eye

Rodarte's Panda Eye

Rodarte: We love a smoky eye, but this is more than anyone could conceivably wear, even Taylor Momsen. With her platinum hair, doesn’t she look a bit like a panda?

Ashish, the New Grunge?

Ashish, the New Grunge?

Ashish: Living in the grunge era much? We debated on whether this belonged in today’s post or next week’s, because a toned-down version would be fabulous for a night out. With this week being Nirvana’s 20th anniversary, this seemed just about right.

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott: And this just seemed totally wrong, from head to toe. We see no reason to bring back the Ellie Mae Clampett look. That would be “The Beverly Hillbillies” for those of you who need to look it up.

Halloween’s just around the corner, so check out ColorOn’s avante garde looks – you can make your makeup your costume! And we’ll be announcing a special Halloween product VERY soon.

Looks from the EMMYs, Blog Reviews from Las Vegas, and Friday’s Winner…

Cobie Smulders

Cobie Smulders

Before we get to the ladies of the EMMYS and Friday’s Winner, we’ll let you know that Christa Emmer, the Beauty Columnist for the Las Vegas Observer, and writer of her own “Beauty Las Vegas” blog, reviewed ColorOn for both. Please show her some love by visiting the sites and checking out her honest opinions.

With so many ways to follow fashion, hair, and makeup trends, we all have the opportunity to dissect — in great detail — the hair, makeup, and clothing celebrities wear to the big RED CARPET events. And since we can’t afford the gowns, and it takes time and sometimes big money to print out a picture and bring it to our stylist or colorist to get THAT hair, we can instantly click our way to every makeup product used on our favorite celeb’s face and purchase them. Watching the EMMYs, we saw three celebrities whose eye makeup could be reproduces in minutes with ColorOn. So, here’s how to look like a Red Carpet veteran without a makeup artist and a toolbox full of makeup…

Cobie Smulders delicately grey and mauve smoky eye is easily reproduced using Finesse, a smoky sunset palette of delicate rose and plush grey from our Eye Envy Rhapsody in Grey Variety Kit. In addition to her deep eggplant eyeliner concentrated heaviest at the outer corners of her eyes, you can create additional shimmering “smoke” by dusting the inner corners and lining the upper and lower lash lines with Smooth Purple Royale Shimmer loose pigment,  midnight-bright purple shimmer for more intensity, or the more delicate Smooth Patina Silver, a medium-grey shimmer, depending on your eye color and skin tone. Set it with the included Get Set! Powder, and add plenty of black mascara. To complete Ms. Smulders’ look, groom your brows, add just the tiniest flush of mauve cream blush on the apples of the cheeks, and choose a petal-pink lip gloss that adds a small amount of shine and color, but stays very close to your natural lip tone.

Minka Kelly

Minka Kelly

Minka Kelly wore a diffused smoky eye that complimented her navy lace Christian Dior gown. To get the same look, apply ColorOn’s El, a soft pink and chocolate brown combine to create a smoky mauve eye, from the Bestsellers  and Smoky Classic Variety Kits. Then add a bit of Smooth Black Star Red Shimmer loose pigment, a black and red shimmer than becomes a dark golden lilac, to the outer half of the lid to deepen and stretch the eye up and out. Smooth Patina Silver at the inner corner of the eyes creates a bright shimmer. Plum liner and black mascara finish the look. A light dusting of a complimentary plum blush and pinkish plum gloss, and you’re done!

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks is always the bombshell! With her can’t-miss-it red tresses and creamy complexion, she tends to break all the rules and go for a bright red mouth and more subtle eyes. To get her shimmery shadows, try a light application of ColorOn’s Ibiza (from the Bestsellers Variety Kit) as a base, then add a rosy champagne shimmer with Metallic Rose Gold Glitter loose pigment, and Smooth Black Shimmer as an eyeliner to define and elongate the upper lash line. Set it with our Setting Powder #2, and add mascara to the top lashes only. Add your perfect matte red lipstick, and call it done.

All of the colors mentioned can be combined and purchased as a Custom Kit, or you can instead buy the Variety Kit in which they’re featured. Either way, same price.

Last but never least, today’s winner of a free 10-application Custom Kit is Mansi Mehta of Santa Clara, California. She’ll be watching her mailbox next to see what beautiful surprise we send her. We’re encouraging our Winners Circle members to post their experiences on our Facebook Fan Page once they’ve had time to play with their new makeup, so that all of you get the benefit of real feedback on the products. And that goes for anyone who is using ColorOn – post your look to our Facebook page and tell everyone what colors you used. We’re a community, and it would be great if you shared your tips and tricks with everyone else!

Have a wonderful weekend as we leave summer behind and celebrate the beginning of the fall season!

We hope you had a chance to see this week’s blog post, and our recommendations for “molten metal eye makeup” —  reproducing looks worn by Emma Stone, Charlize Theron, and Tika Sumpter with ColorOn.

We’ll be back next week with more makeup commentary, ideas, and trends. Have a fabulous weekend!

Molten Metal Eye Makeup

Standard
Emma Stone

Emma Stone

Today we have three very different celebrities in terms of hair, eye, and skin color, but all three have something in common – molten metallic eye makeup. It’s a fashion statement that works year-round because it the right metal works with every skin tone, from the palest to the deepest.

Pale and red-haired Emma Stone goes totally bronze, picking up the same tones in her hair and closely matching her gown. The contrast against her creamy white complexion is beautiful. You can achieve the same eye look with ColorOn’s Bronze Goddess from the Metallics Variety Kit, keeping the bulk of the shadow from just above the crease to the lash line, and using the extra creamy mineral makeup to line below the bottom lashes all the way from the inner corner of the eye outward, extending it just a bit beyond the lashes for a smoky look. The bronze makes her hazel green eyes pop. Black eyeliner and mascara complete the look. With that much bronze going on, she wisely goes easy on the cheeks and lips with very sheer bronzer and a non-shimmer caramel gloss.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron

Oscar-winning blonde actress and the woman who j’adores Dior fragrances, Charlize Theron pairs a golden eye with on-trend fuchsia lips, leaving the rest of her flawless face bare. Try ColorOn’s 14 Karat instant eye shadow appliqué, a from the Metallics Variety Kit to the whole lid, ending just below the brow bone, and using the extra creamy mineral shadow under the lower lashes from just under the pupil outward, extending it just beyond the lash line. Plenty of black mascara is all that’s left to complete this simple-yet-stunning look.

Tika Sumpter

Tika Sumpter

Gossip Girl regular Tika Sumpter goes for a subtle metallic eye while playing up her perfect eyebrows, and her sculpted peony blush and matching lip color. To duplicate her look, try ColorOn’s 14 Karat, which is a much more subtle color on her beautiful mocha skin tone. Then add a bit of our Smooth Monarch Gold Shimmer loose mineral pigment at the inner corners of the eye. This bright yellow-gold shimmer looks like 14-karat dust and is perfect to accentuate the inner corner of the eye, or to add a bit of extra golden patina to the lids and crease.

Remember that every colorOn instant eye shadow can be combined and purchased as a Custom Kit or you can instead buy pre-made Variety Kits. Either way, same price. There are 78 instant eye shadow looks and 24 pre-selected Variety Kits. And stock up on the 11 Smooth Shimmers or 7 Metallic Glitters loose mineral shadows while you’re at it; some are limited editions and won’t be around forever!

United We Stand: The 10th Anniversary of 9/11

In the decade since September 11, 2001, our lives were irreparably changed. No one forgets. And every year, no matter what out differences, we all stand united as one people to honor those lost, the heroes who gave their lives to save others, and to send the message that we will never allow terrorists to crush our spirit. On this day, we are not different races, different religions, or members of different political parties. We are just Americans.

We do have a new member of the Winners Circle for this Friday. Norma Sanchez of Houston, Texas wins a free 10-application Custom Kit of our summer-proof, crease-resistant, water-and sweat-resistant mineral instant eyeshadows. She’ll be watching her mailbox next week to see what beautiful surprise we send her.

We hope that you find your own special way to honor 9/11, and if you are a person who lost a mother, father, brother, sister, friend, relative, or other loved one in the attacks, or have a loved one fighting overseas to defend our country and defeat those perpetrated this crime against humanity, our hearts go out to you.

Molto Bella! Looks from the Venice Film Festival

Standard
Madonna

Madonna

Didn’t we tell you how obsessed we are with awards shows and film festivals? This week, we have the Venice Film Festival to pick apart. The great thing about film festivals is that the celebrities have to make multiple appearances, so you get to see them in two or three outfits – ball gowns, cocktail dresses, and something fabulous for press interviews. The evening gowns in Venice were totally amazing, and the three celebs whose makeup we’re going to analyze – according to everyone who has an opinion on such – had the best gowns of the festival.

This is Madonna’s first appearance ever in our “how to look like a celebrity” blogs, but she really made all the twenty-somethings look like amateurs. How amazing is it that she has been famous and a fashion icon now for over 30 years? In order to give all the marquee value to her vivid red pout, she chose to keep the eye shadow subtle, which you can do with ColorOn’s Laguna, a soft beige washed with a translucent splash of violet that brings out the bit of hazel in Madonna’s eyes. It can be found in the Bestsellers Variety Kit.  Tons of black mascara and her trademark brows, along with a very Veronica Lake hairstyle, give her that Old Hollywood glamour. No one EVER forget this woman is a STAR.

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood did a fabulous job showing off how versatile her new short ‘do can be, and also went for a very classic Hollywood look with her evening gowns. To offset her bright-white, floor length shirtwaist gown, she chose pretty pinks and corals, which you can easily reproduce with ColorOn’s Sunset Beach, a wash of beige and coral shadows reminiscent of a sunset over by the sea – or canal, in this case. It can also be found in the Bestsellers Variety Kit. Plenty of black mascara, nicely filled-in brows, a pinkish-coral cream blush and a deeper lip in the same shade give her a delicate flush.

Keira Knightly

Keira Knightly

Keira Knightly had the most delicious gown of the entire festival, a gold-embroidered Valentino Couture, but we liked her daytime makeup for the press interviews. She’s playing up her graduated bob with this season’s heavy brows, balancing them out with a daytime smoky eye (see our recent blog post). You can get the same look with ColorOn’s Noche, a gradient white and black from the Smoky Classics and Bestsellers Variety Kits. Applied with a light hand, the white accents the brow bone and the creamy black mineral shadow is blended to stay on the lid. Black Mascara and a touch of black eyeliner below the lower lashes bring all the focus on the eyes, and Keira chose to apply a pale pink blush and a peony pink lipstick to keep the look pretty for day instead of looking too nightclubby.

Remember, there are 78 different colorOn instant eye shadow applicators, and 24 pre-packaged Variety Kits. You can find the looks above not only in the Variety Kits, but in the Custom Kits where you can mix and match to your heart’s content. You’re ready, set, go…for anything!

We’ll be back Friday with the Winners Circle. Have a lovely week.

Bringing Home the VMAs with ColorOn; Friday’s Winner!

Standard
Katy Perry

Katy Perry

We follow the looks at the award shows a bit obsessively, to see how our favorite celebrities choose to look and dress when left to their own devices. Musicians and actors are always playing roles and having their hair, makeup, and clothing dictated by the record company, video directors, producers, photographers, stylists, and so on. That’s the reason the Red Carpet makes for such GREAT television!

We’ve picked three looks that celebrities wore at the MTV Video Music Awards last Sunday so that we could show you how to re-create those same looks using ColorOn…Professional products.

Katy Perry likes bright colors, no? With her lavender hair (surprise!), what else would she pick but a nice lavender eye makeup? ColorOn’s Grace, a pop of gradient lilac and soft grey, like the early morning tropical skies, is perfect – or if you want a bit more pink in the mix, use Finesse, a smoky sunset palette of delicate gradient rose and plush grey. Both are from the Eye Envy Rhapsody in Grey Variety Kit. She topped it off with her usual black eyeliner and tons of black mascara, and instead of a nude lip with all that color, she went for bright petal pink gloss. If you love color, this is the look for you!

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes went for a more subtle look, which you can easily reproduce using ColorOn’s El, a soft pink and chocolate brown that combine to create a smoky mauve, from the Bestsellers and Smoky Classics Variety Kits. Applied from the lash line to the brow, you’ll have the same smoky mauve Katie is wearing. To contrast, she’s applied a bronzy shadow below the lower lash line, which you can recreate with ColorOn’s Smooth Black Star Gold Shimmer loose mineral powder shadow, a dark black/brown and gold shimmer that goes on bronze. Two coats of mascara on the top lashes only, a bit of bronzer on the apples of the cheeks, and a deep nude lipstick keep the focus firmly on her eyes.

Victoria Justice

Victoria Justice

Victoria Justice, star of Nickelodeon’s “Victorious” and an actress/singer/songwriter/dancer, wore lovely makeup to the VMAs, which you can easily recreate using ColorOn’s Pink Lemonade, a sunny combination of yellow and coral, from the Naturally Cooler Variety Kit and a strip of false eyelashes. She kept her eye makeup subtle in order to give center stage to her berry stained lips, looking perfectly on-trend for the fall.

And without further ado, today’s winner of a free 10-application Custom Kit is Judy Rhodes of Newton, North Carolina.

We’ll be back next week with more makeup commentary, ideas, and trends. In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend!
