Paris Fashion Week: Bedazzled Brows and Dazzling Eyes

It’s the last of our 2012 Fashion Week round ups, ending with the City of Lights, Paris. Once again, there are more similarities than differences when we compare it to New York, London, and Milan – barely there makeup on dewy, glowing skin; strong brows; lots of either slicked-back or flowing textured hair; heavily smoked eyes and nude or naked lips; delicate or nude eyes and statement lip colors; and the avante garde looks. Yes, there were some bleached brows in Paris, but probably the least number in all of the shows for Fall (yay, France!).

No reason to break a pattern here; we’ll start with the macquillage we love, then we’ll explore the slap that had us asking “quelle serieuse?” But we’ll divide it up by looks, too, just to break it up a bit for this last installment. To see larger views of the images, click on them. Most are 550×550 pixels, so you can really see the detail when you want to try these looks out for yourself.

Smoky Eyes/Nude Lips…

Costume National: Here’s a smoky eye that confines itself primarily to the upper eyelid and brow bone only, which is unusual this season. The onyx shadow starts at the inner corner of the brow, sweeping outward past the tail of the brow to come to a tapering point at the temple just shy of the hairline. More of the same deep shadow is applied from the center of the eyelid outward to mimic the “cat’s eye” shape and further draw the eye up and outward. A thin application of black liner is pushed into the lower lash line along the outer two-thirds of the eye, and black kohl is applied to the waterline.

To get the same effect, start with ColorOn’s Noche from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit, tilting the applicator at an angle so that you get a good deposit of the deep gray and black creamy mineral shadows into the inner corner of the eye angling up and out toward the tail of the brow and temple. Once you peel away the applicator, reapply again with the darkest part pressed partially to the outer corner of the eye if there is any area that did not receive shadow from the initial application. Blend so that the edges overlap. Dip an eyeliner brush into the mineral shadow remaining on the cover film and line below the lower lash line.

Add kohl to the inner rims if you are comfortable wearing it and it doesn’t irritate your eyes. Apply a coat of black mascara but skip curling your lashes. Brush your brows up and out in the same direction as your eye makeup and fix them in place with brow gel or ColorOn BrowPro in your thickness and shade to further enhance the upward sweep of the look. The rest of the face is dusted with translucent powder and lips are bare with just a slick of non-shiny balm.

Givenchy: What a gorgeous, warm, sexy smoky eye! Instead of being drab, the monochromatic tones are rich and sensual, with the eyes sporting a glossed warm base tone, and the lips a cool matte base, yet all in the same color family.

Start with ColorOn’s Bronze Goddess from the Eye Envy Precious Metals Variety Kit, making sure you get a good application from the lash line all the way up to the brow, and from the very inner corner of the brow all the way out to the end of the tail, blending with you ring finger to be sure you cover the entire area. Take a tapered eyeshadow brush (an eyeliner brush will be too thin) and stroke it through the extra creamy shadow remaining on the cover film, and rim heavily below the lower lash line, extending it out and up to meet the shadow near the brow tail. Apply a small dab of an emollient eye cream like La Mer or Bobbi Brown Balm Extra to the lids (or one of the eye glosses like Tom Ford, Paul & Joe, MAC, or even Vaseline) to create the same glossed look, remembering that this is going to move and crease, unlike your usual application of ColorOn with its setting powder. Use a brown kohl or bronze pencil to rim the water line, and add a coat of black mascara. Brush the brows up and out toward the temples, and either fix with clear gel if your brows are dark brown or black, or use BrowPro to to color, define, shape, and hold the eyebrows in place.

The barest hint of a nude-to-pale bronze matte blush is swept lightly across the very outer top of the cheekbones and up into the temple area to meet the eye shadows, and the rest of the face is lightly dusted with translucent powder. The lips are accentuated with a satin matte lipstick in a cool cappuccino shade.

Jean Charles de Castelbajac: The smoky eye in Paris kept getting more and more deconstructed. At de Castelbajac, the metallic smoky eye was a deep black and glittering emerald green that looked so carelessly applied you could see finger smudges outward onto the models’ temples. Now, that’s perfectly fine on the runway, but out in the real world, you’re just as likely to elicit whispers about whether you either, 1) made it home last night and are wearing the outfit your went out in, or 2) are perhaps still obviously inebriated from said night out at the clubs, Either way, not a recommended career move. We heartily recommend toning this look down for all occasions but the well-planned (and perhaps well out of town) Ladies Night Out. Start with ColorOn’s Noche from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit, eschewing the lightest shade for a heavy application of the blackest creamy mineral pigments, starting at the inner corner of the eyebrow and making sure you reach the entire lid and outward and up to the outer tip of the eyebrow, blending up into the eyebrow and making the fingerprints if you desire out on the temples.

Dip a relatively fine eyeliner brush into the leftover creamy black mineral pigments that still remain on the cover film, and sweep them in a line pushed into the outer 7/8ths of the lower lashes. Clean the brush, and dip it in the white cream minerals on the same cover film, tracing the very inner corner of the eyed around the tear duct. Sweep a deep shimmering jewel-toned shadow over the upper lids and into the crease, either a deep forest green as shown in the photo, or one of ColorOn’s Smooth Shimmer Mineral Pigments like Black Star Blue Shimmer (deep sapphire blue/black), Black Star Red (black and red shimmer than becomes a dark golden lilac), Black Star Gold (dark black/brown and gold), Purple Royale Shimmer (a midnight-bright purple) or Sienna Shimmer (an earthy pop of red brown). Add black mascara and brush and set the brows with gel or use ColorOn’s BrowPro to color, fill, and set them.

Add a coat of black mascara, and dust the face with translucent powder. This look doesn’t even require lip color, but at least a clear lip balm will make the lips look healthy and moisturized.

John Galliano: The smoky look at John Galliano’s show was heavily worked into the entire orbital socket, surrounding the eye on all sides. Like the smoky eyes at Costume National and de Castelbajac, start with ColorOn’s Noche from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit. Blend the deepest black into the inner corners and out and down at the outer corners. Dip an eyeshadow brush into the darkest creamy shadow left on the cover film and sweep it under the lower lashes, joining it with the shadow at the inner and outer corners until you have a good density all the way around the entire eye. Add black kohl to the inner rims, and apply black mascara. Unlike the previous blackened eye looks, at Galliano the makeup artists did use a lighter pale grey/white under the brows, which were shaped and filled to match the models’ haircolor. Choose your thickness and matching color of BrowPro and apply.

A pale pink crystal gloss was applied to the lips and blotted, leaving a hint of shine and shimmer. You could also use one of the new shimmer lip balms from drugstore brands Nivea, Sally Hansen, Blistex, or Burt’s Bees.

Kayne West: American hip-hop mogul Kanye West decided to debut his women’s line in Paris, and we won’t bother to comment on the reviews of the clothes. The makeup, however, was certainly…interesting. Similar in some ways to the deconstructed look at de Castelbajac, at first glance it looked as if the models had been caught in the rain or crying, and their dark eye makeup had run. On closer inspection, you realize that the “runoff” under the eyes is actually the fingerprints of the makeup artists, and that the heavy deposits of black color on the upper lids and on the browbone are feathered to look like lashes (the same effect was used at Anthony Vacarello as well). Black kohl lining the inner rims of the eyes, multiple coats of mascara for spidery lashes, groomed and filled brows, contoured cheekbones, and baby pink lips balm finish the look. If you wanted to create a modified version of this one, grab your Noche from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit, a fine eyeliner brush for dragging through the shadow on the browbone to create the feathering, an eyeshadow brush for depositing a heavy application of Noche below the lower lashes, your black kohl, the proper thickness and color BrowPro, your favorite mascara, and a sweet pink lippy, and don’t be afraid to get your fingers dirty.

Soft Eye/Strong Lips…

Haider Ackerman: This look is very exaggerated; in past seasons (like Spring 2012!), Haider Ackerman has done much softer, more wearable makeup. This model can perhaps be excused for her lack of brows as a natural redhead (she has invisible eyelashes as well), but other models from the show had dark hair and almost non-existent brows, so someone hasn’t received the “stop-plucking, start-filling” memo. Combine that with the no-mascara look, and we have a very surprised or angry looking (depending on her haircolor) line of models strutting down the runway. All of them received an application of winged ochre-colored eye shadow, in varying degrees of intensity, no cheek color, a liberal dusting of translucent powder for a matte finish, and either a fuchsia or brick-red matte lip.

Julien David: The matte lip is certainly mounting a comeback now that the technology allows for cosmetic companies to get the same appearance without drying out the lip and causing some of the unsightly problems that earlier generations of matte lipsticks caused. At Julien David, this orange-based matte red lip is gorgeous, and is balanced by the model’s own groomed black brows, a pale taupe cream shadow on the lids and brow bones, a shimmery taupe cream shadow in the inner corners of the eyes and under the lower lashes, and a coat of black mascara. If you intend to try this look, be sure your brows are groomed and filled if they are not as strong or dark as the model’s in order to balance such a vivid lip color. Of course, we recommend BrowPro for that.

Kenzo: It’s been said by more than one fashion writer that this shade of bright pink (made famous by Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli) is the new red, and it looked stunning on the runway at Kenzo. It’s entirely possible that this is even NARS “Schiap” matte lipstick, his homage to the designer. Paired with another Fall 2012 trend, geometric eyeliner, this is a look that’s fairly easy to recreate. Nina Ricci: What a beautiful makeup application at Nina Ricci! Yes, that is not what you’re supposed to hear about your makeup, but that’s what we’re “talking about” ( the blogger euphemism for one-way conversation unless y’all comment) here. It’s when a complete stranger says that to you that you need to get to a ladies room, stat, and start wiping things off. The balance between brows, eyes, and lips is exquisite. Her arches are the perfect shape and thickness for her face, and are filled and groomed without looking over- or underdone. ColorOn’s BrowPro is your all-in-one application that will color, define, shape, and hold the eyebrows in place. The eye makeup is subtle but enhancing, using cool tones of taupe and brown to play off the cool undertones of her alabaster skin and the pop of cool burgundy at the center of her matte scarlet lips. Try ColorOn’s Gypsy from the Metallics Variety Kit, applying lightly so that you don’t deposit too much of the creamy mineral shadows – you want this to be a subtle, not a smoky application. Dip a tapered shadow brush into the deeper shade of Gypsy left on the cover film and sweep it below the lower lash line. With a lip color this pronounced, apply with a lip brush after lining the lips with a matching lip liner. Blot, and reapply. Then take a burgundy or merlot lipstick and dab into the center of the lower lip with your ring finger, extending a bit to either side. Lightly press lips together.

Viktor & Rolf: Grey eyes and merlot lips were the striking combination at Viktor & Rolf, and even though most of the country is dealing with record-breaking temperatures this first week of Spring, one look at this makeup and you’re already thinking about the leaves turning. Just like the models at Nina Ricci, we have that perfect balance of the three elements: brows, eyes and lips.

The models’ brows at V&R were brushed up and out, filled and fixed. BrowPro in your thickness and color will do the trick. Unlike most of the other runways that featured such a deep lip, the makeup artists did not opt for taupes and beiges, instead using a lightly shimmering grey as the neutral eye shadow, with a touch of white shimmer in the inner corners. You can get the same look with ColorOn’s Platinum & Pearls from the Metallics Variety Kit. Dip a tapered shadow brush into the deeper grey shade of left on the cover film and sweep it below the lower lash line, and then use the shimmery white on the inner corners of the eye. Apply black mascara, and a bit of nude powder blush below the cheekbones as contour. Victor & Rolf showed this dark wine lip in both glossed and matte versions, with the matte uniformly a dark, cool burgundy with razor-sharp edges. The glossy version, shown here, is a bit more diffuse with a burgundy-bordering-on-black base edging inward to a truer burgundy at the center of the lip.

Yves Saint Laurent: At YSL, the balance was between shiny and matte surfaces. The slicked-back hair and saturated crimson lips were patent-leather shiny; the skin was beautifully flawless and matte. The eyebrows were strong, groomed and filled, the eye shadows a subtle winged taupe and a touch of gold shimmer in the inner corners. A flick of mascara and the barest hint of blush, and it was done.


The Soft/No Makeup Look…

Over at Refinery29.com, one of our favorite websites, they recently posted an article titled, “Is The No Makeup Look On The Runway A Total Cop-Out?”.  And to look at some of these close-up shots, you might start to agree. But look closely. While seeming to require little-to-no makeup, all of them take some work, and some take as much work as any of the dramatic looks above.

Christian Dior: We’re showing you these two models from the Dior runway to illustrate how the same eye makeup and lip colors can work on two very different skintones. The look starts with a matte beige and brown eyeshadow combination, which you can duplicate using ColorOn’s Ibiza from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit.

The twist in this eye look is a pale silvery white eyeliner along the upper lash line, starting in the just below the inner corner of the eye and sweeping up and outward, ending just shy of the outer corner of the eye. You can use a pencil or liquid, or try ColorOn’s Smooth Pearl Shimmer loose mineral pigment, a pure iridescent pearly white, drawn on with a damp eyeliner brush. Dip a heavier tapered or eye shadow brush in the deepest matte brown creamy mineral shadow from the film covering your Ibiza application and sweep it under the outer two-thirds of the lower lashes.

Add mascara, and groom and fill brows with the right thickness and color of BrowPro. A salmon-pink powder blush is dusted high on the cheekbones and swept up toward the temples, and the lips are slicked with a sheer crème lipstick in the same family.

Vanessa Bruno: There’s a surprising amount of makeup on this seemingly “bare” face at Vanessa Bruno. There’s an illuminating “concealer” under the eyes (one of those that purports to diffuse circles and shadows with radiance and luminous pigments; in our experience, they don’t – and if it doesn’t work on someone this young, imagine how well it doesn’t work on those of us with well-established dark circles in our 30s, 40s, and beyond. Yes, we’re looking at you, Touche Éclat.); pale brown sugar cream shadow on the browbone and in the crease, and lilac/gray cream shadow on the lids; curled lashes with a coat of mascara on the top lashes; a delicate pink cream blush rubbed into the apples of the cheeks; a luminizer on the tops of the cheekbones, above the peaks of the brow arches, and  at the cupid’s bow of the lips; her brows are groomed and filled; and a baby pink lip balm or sheer satin lipstick. So that she looks like she’s not wearing any makeup.

Gareth Pugh: The model’s skin s very dewy, and we know it’s not simply the sheen of sweat from the multiple clothing changes and hot lights on the runway (there’s a twee euphemism for sweating, but our pragmatic natures block us from ever remembering what it is).

What we have here is the perfect makeup/no makeup storm: a model who is not yet of legal drinking age in most states in the U.S. (she may not even be old enough to vote), the addition of an illuminating moisturizer like MAC Strobe Cream, a flush-colored cream blush, and a just-bitten, pinky/peach gloss with not a speck of shimmer. No mascara, no eye makeup, but her brows are brushed and there is the slightest touch of a blonde brow pencil or powder to give them just a bit of color they were lacking.

Leonard: We concede there’s a golden/ochre eye shadow, brown mascara (and curled lashes), and clear lip gloss. To duplicate the same eye shadow color, use ColorOn’s 14 Karat from the Metallics Variety Kit.

Paul & Joe: Coco Rocha is wearing a touch of mascara (and we do mean a touch; it could be left over from the day before), a flick of blush, and slick of clear warm plum/pink lip gloss. And she may have shown up in it.

Isabel Marant: Joan Smalls was this year’s MVP; she was EVERYWHERE, and looked amazing.

Even the hair and makeup “artists” at Isabel Marant couldn’t make her look bad, and it looks like they really tried.

They seem to have deliberately used products to mattify her hair so that it didn’t shine and looked dull. Apparently concealer and mascara were no-nos, but black liquid eyeliner and bronzer were on the approved list. Oh, and lip color was out. Yet even with all of that, Joan still looks gorgeous.

Chanel: They’re the brows you couldn’t possibly have missed in all of the press coverage; instead of making the models pretty at Chanel, they glued stones to their faces. OK, that’s perhaps an oversimplification – they glued semiprecious gemstones to strips of material and affixed them over the models’ own eyebrows. No mascara, no blush, a bit of pale pink gloss, some powder. C’est tout. Then they slicked their hair back into tight ponytails. We believe wholeheartedly that Coco Chanel would be utterly appalled.

It’s All about Color…

This part is mostly just for fun.

Akris: Although she has on a full makeup application, something about this look still feels unfinished, and we’re not quite sure why. It’s one you either love or just feel kind of “meh” about, but more of us loved it than were indifferent — but we all thought the model adorable. You can get the same pretty teal blue look with Key West from the Eye Envy Tropics Variety Kit.

Manish Aroroa: In spite of its wearability issues (because nothing says “breaking through the glass ceiling” like paper butterfly false eyelashes), this look is really quite pretty. It was also shown with a matte blue-based crimson lip.

Miu Miu: Well, we like this better than Miuccia Prada’s makeup in Milan for the Prada shows. And no, the irony is not lost on us.

Now, it’s possible you could have been too busy, or out of town, or away from a computer, smartphone, iPad, or tablet — or you may have been under a rock – and missed Monday’s launch of BrowPro. If so, you’ll have to wait, because we’re going to continue our 2012 Fall Fashion Week “Greatest Hits” series with Milan Fashion Week – or part 3 of 4 if you’re counting.

Once again, we see major similarities – when it comes to makeup and hair – on the runway, even if the clothes in Milan were strikingly different from those shown in New York and London. There were lots of up-dos, both the artfully undone and the slickly severe; ponytails; braids; the half up-do; center-parted and straight; and sensuously long and textured. The makeup ran the gamut as well, but certain trends will out: bold brows, bold lips paired with minimal eye makeup, smoky eyes paired with delicate lip colors or no lip color at all, graphic eyeliner, bright pops of color, and the occasional makeup artist still clinging to the bleached brow, which is starting to look very dated, especially when paired with heavy eye makeup, like that at Prada. The models Miuccia Prada sent down her runway looked like aliens!

Let’s start with the looks we loved, then we can point and laugh at some of the looks we have to assume were designed just to get attention, like the bratty kid who doesn’t distinguish between praise and scolding, as long as someone is looking at her.

Blumarine: If you were going to create a look that had to say “sexy and Italian,” wouldn’t this be it? A modern version of the Italian actresses of the Sixties (think Sophia Loren, Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale, Virna Lisi), this look is all heavy black eyeliner over a velvet-brown smoky eye, dark arched brows, sculpted bronze cheekbones, and lush nude lips. Create the same look with ColorOn’s Gypsy from the Eye Envy Precious Metals Variety Kit, then layer on your favorite black eyeliner in liquid, pencil, or powder. We love our own Smooth Black Shimmer loose mineral pigment for its dimensional look and non-irritating ingredients. Lots of black mascara, a matte bronzer swirled onto cheekbones (if they’re prominent) or just below them (to create prominence), and a satiny pinkish nude lipstick, and you’re ready for “la dolce vita.”

Dolce & Gabbana: Luckily, this isn’t about the accessories! So, ignore the rococo hairpiece and earrings, and focus on the beautiful metallic pastels. What’s amazing is how well the same colors work on models with two very different skin tones! To get the same effect, start with ColorOn’s El from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit, a gradient soft pink and chocolate brown that combine to create a smoky mauve. Then, layer on Smooth Arctic Silver Shimmer, a silvery white platinum shimmer pigment, across the lid, into the crease, and the inner corners of the eye. Curl your lashes, and add black mascara. The brows are very strong with this look, so make sure yours are well-groomed and filled (we think you know what our recommendation will be!). A delicate mauve blush is swirled onto the apples of the cheeks and out toward the temples, and a sheer mauve gloss that lets the lips’ texture show through completes the look.

Etro: Here we have the amazingly lovely Joan Smalls again, this time for Etro. The velvet-brown smoky eye, matte bronze cheek and nude lip are virtually the same as those at Blumarine, and you would use all of the same color recommendations. Again, note the attention paid to grooming and filling in the brows, even on someone who already has black eyebrows. Are you sensing a trend, as well as where we’re going with this?

Gianfranco Ferre: This is the smoky eye squared! And it’s not just smoky; it’s metallic, it’s a deep sapphire blue, it’s more than a bit unkempt, and it extends almost to the temples. To achieve the same look, use ColorOn’s Smooth Black Star Blue Shimmer loose mineral pigment, a steely midnight blue shimmer. Apply it from the inner corners of the eye upward to the lower inside corner of the brow at an almost 90-degree angle, then sweep it straight out and a bit down to meet the tip of the outer tail of your brow, leaving a gap of bare skin below your brow’s arch. Extend the shadow as far out on the temple as you feel comfortable with – as shown, this look is not for a day at the office, unless your office is a nightclub. Fill in the lid and sweep the color below the lower lash line as heavily as is appropriate. You’ll notice that the makeup artists did not clean up all of the little speckles of shimmer that fell below the eye, nor did they clean up any dots of mascara that occurred when applying it – within reason. There is a definite perimeter to the eye makeup, no matter how “next day” it may look. The brows are groomed and lightly filled, just the barest hint of nude blush near the temples, and a “you lips but better” balm are added to create a finished look that doesn’t fight with this major eye.

Gucci (with a caveat): This look is missing two things we really love – eye makeup, which we can live with because we adore the deep burgundy lip, and eyebrows, which we can’t live with, because something is needed to balance out that lip. We totally agree with the theory that says heavy eye makeup AND major lips just look too…done. It lacks balance. But this model’s coloring is so pale that her lack of brows and minimalist eye makeup are overwhelmed by the lovely shiny patent-leather lips. Just a little bit of brow love would turned this one around into simply gorgeous.

Moschino Cheap & Chic: Notice anything? Talk about a statement lip. It’s not a color just anyone can pull off, but it looks amazing with her skin tone. Do we love it with a canary yellow blouse? Meh. But back to the makeup – just a hint of grey shadow, black kohl on the inner rims of the eyes, and no mascara work well, but we think she needed a bit of fill on the brows, again to balance out such a major lip color and to frame the eyes. Once you get used to the strong brows, their absence really stands out!

Normaluisa: Another statement mouth, but this time we have some brows! The eye makeup is just a touch of brown mascara and a dusting of translucent powder on the lids, but her brows are groomed and lightly filled, albeit thinner than many of the other looks we’ve seen. Still, the effort pays off to add the right amount of “weight” to balance out the shiny coral-red lips. Even though her coloring is also very pale, compare her to the model at Gucci, and she looks delicately beautiful instead of just slightly consumptive.

Roberto Cavalli: There are about five different colors to this eye look, but Roberto Cavalli didn’t build his reputation on subtlety. By starting with ColorOn, you already have multiple colors on a single applicator, so recreating this look isn’t as complex as you might think. Apply Noche from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit, a gradient black, grey, and white. Use the extra creamy mineral shadow that is left on the cover film to line heavily below the lower lashes. Next, use our Smooth Purple Royale Shimmer loose mineral pigment to dust a pop of bright purple in a crescent from the inner corner of the eye upward below the brow to just above the pupil. Then, use our Smooth Monarch Gold Shimmer, a bright yellow-gold shimmer that looks like 14-karat dust, to trace the inner corners of the eyes top and bottom. Add plenty of mascara, and groom and fill the brows. The makeup artists at Cavalli eschewed cheek color altogether, opting to draw a fine line of the same gold along the cupid’s-bow of the upper lip and filling the lips with a cool nude satin lipstick.

Salvatore Ferragamo: Angelina Jolie’s go-to label is all about subtle elegance. The smoky doeskin eye makeup, groomed brows, sculpted cheeks, and nude lips are trademark Angelina looks, in fact. You can easily recreate this runway look by using ColorOn’s Ibiza from the Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kit, a subtle yet sophisticated smoky nude comprised of gradient beige and brown. Mascara was used on the upper lashes only, with special concentration on the outer third. Brows are groomed and filled in, and the cheeks contoured in the hollow below the cheekbone in a matte nude with peach undertones. The lips have a just-bitten color to them achieved through using a pink/nude lip liner to color in the entire lip, then topping it with lip balm instead of a gloss.

Bottega Veneta (with a caveat): We don’t hate this look; in fact, we debated on where to put it. It landed here because there was more in the minus column than the plus. We like the graphic eye shadow; we just think it isn’t really a wearable look for most people. We think she desperately needed mascara to balance out such a strong amount of eye shadow. We think her lightened brows are out of step, but they have a great shape and thickness. We like the almost-black matte berry lips, but we know that virtually no one can wear this look successfully, nor would they. It’s a runway look that requires a lot of softening and modification before it translates into the real world.

Byblos: This one got full-on snorting giggles and eye-rolling – and that was from the guys. Ok, not really – but it was the first time they recognized an influence, and started calling this look “the Tebow.” Even if we were to completely ignore the fact that the eye makeup is in the wrong place (it DOES eliminate the need for concealer), she has no other makeup on, and her forehead is shiny, her brows are sparse, her lashes non-existent. She’s a gorgeous girl, and they’ve gone out of their way to make her look unattractive. That doesn’t help sell the drama – or the clothes.

Fendi: Italian milkmaid? We have no idea what they were thinking at Fendi when they came up with this stinker of a look. Last season, it was gold and silver leaf on the eyes. Now, it’s a square of white pigment that covers part of the eyebrow, black eyelids, spider lashes, and Heidi braids. We can’t believe we’re actually going to admit this, but we preferred the Spring 2012 crazy foil eyes.

Prada: We tried to appreciate this look for the artistry involved, but we kept coming back to the fact that it’s, well…ugly. You may disagree, and we’d love to hear from everyone who thinks it is fabulous and will be wearing it. As a company founded by the makeup artist who invented and patented the ColorOn technology, we always appreciate the time and talent that go into avante garde looks like this. But if you had the opportunity to look at any of the pictures or video from this show, and saw model after model with this makeup on, you have to agree that they looked eerie and not terribly attractive. It’s almost insectile.

Versace: This look has some good points, but like Bottega Veneta, they were overcome by the not-so-good. The highly graphic eye liner is very on-trend, as is the sharp-edged block of color on the lids and brow bone. The black is too saturated for daywear, but that could be overlooked. It’s the brows! Why would they take such lovely, perfectly arched and shaped brows, and bleach them? Against such strong eye makeup, they’re lost. Top them with bangs that look like they were cut by a five-year-old with her blunt scissors, and we’re done. This look had promise, and they blew it.

Hold the clean spooly brush at an angle and comb brows out toward the temples. Separate the clear cover film from the white Instant Applicator pad. You are going to use the BrowPro on the clear film for the one eyebrow, and the BrowPro on the Instant Applicator pad for the second eyebrow. Line up the brow imprint on the clear cover film, placing it to your own eyebrow and hold, using the same technique as ColorOn Instant Eye Shadow Applicators, press and very gently rub.

Remove the clear film and use the spooly brush to comb the color through the brow to complete the look. Using the enclosed Get Set! Setting Powder will make the brows smudge-proof. However, the setting powder will lighten the application a bit so keep that in mind just as you do when applying ColorOn Instant Eye Shadow. Now, do your second eyebrow with the white Instant Applicator pad and complete the same way as the first brow.  Examine arches and, if necessary, tweeze any stray hairs above, below, or between the eyebrows.

London Fashion Week: All About Eye…Brows

Our apologies for our Friday blog arriving on Saturday evening. It’s been one of THOSE WEEKS.

We took a break from Fall Fashion Week coverage to bring you our favs from the Academy Awards – and what a beauty and fashion extravaganza that was, as well as the first award show in history to spawn two body part-related Twitter accounts.

Now, we hop the pond for the best makeup looks from the 2012 Fall collections shown at London Fashion Week. What took us by complete surprise is that one of our favorite makeup looks came from the runway at Vivienne Westwood – not exactly known for restraint and wearability! Granted, this is just one of a number of iterations the makeup team sent down the catwalk, but still.

The overarching (pun intended) trend we’re seeing on all the runways, from New York to Paris, London to Milan, is the continued return of the strong brow. Granted, there is still the odd designer who is having the makeup artist bleach the brows (so very 2010) or thin them for a “vintage” look, but they are a shrinking minority.

And if you’re paying attention to your fashion magazines and blogs, there are entire articles devoted to brow grooming, beauty editorial is showing models like Arizona Muse, Daphne Groeneveld, Joan Smalls, and Jacquelyn Jablonski with major eyebrows, and the sale of brow-growth products (i.e. lash-growth products repackaged with a spooly wand) and lash-growth products for use on the brows continues to climb. And a quick look back at last week’s Oscar post will show you that every single celeb we featured had highly groomed and filled-in brows, even if the rest of her makeup was barely there.

So, London.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD:  The Queen of Avante Garde and Punk Progenitor has become the Grand Dame of the Red Carpet in recent years (Rose Byrne was wearing her design at the Oscars), but that doesn’t mean her runway shows are any less entertaining. Some of the hair and makeup in this show was so fabulously over-the-top that you can see the indulgent laughter on the faces of the fans in the front rows. Yet this look is really quite wearable and flattering, a bit monochromatic but with a warmth and naturalness that is perfect for day, and would transition easily to an evening look with the addition of a few coats of mascara and a deeper lip. For a matte look, use Ibiza from the Bestsellers or Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kits, a smoky nude comprised of gradient brown and beige. If you want a shimmery eye, use 14 Karat from the Metallics Variety Kit, a gradient wash of rich golds. Be sure to bring the shadow all the way up to the brow and out to the tail of the brow at the temple. Dip a liner brush into the extra mineral cream that remains on the mylar cover and use it to line under the lower lashes. To replicate this look, brown or clear mascara is called for, although you may feel too “undone” if you usually wear black mascara. The brows are filled and then brushed up and fixed with a bit of wax or gel. Complete the look with a matte bronzer swirled onto the apples of the cheeks, and a lightly colored lip balm like Fresh Honey Sugar or one of the new “butter balms” from L’Oreal or Revlon.

BURBERRY PRORSUM: Models at the Burberry Prorsum show sported smoky eyes colored in sumptuous, velvety shades. The idea was to create a smudged look that wasn’t too heavy or structured, and looked a bit worn in and casual. Start with ColorOn’s Gypsy instant eye shadow from the Metallics Variety Kit, a deep, sultry mix of rich gradient hues of shimmering mocha topped with metallic white. Dip a liner brush in the extra creamy mineral pigments remaining on the mylar cover sheet and line under the lower lashes with the deepest mocha shade. Burberry’s makeup artist, Wendy Rowe, used a single coat of black mascara, and brushed and groomed the model’s already naturally dark and heavy brows. A touch of earth-toned blush and a deep nude lip color complete the look. Long, center-parted hair further enhances the “look at my eyes-and-brows” focus.

HOUSE OF HOLLAND: Even though the precise, merlot-colored lip and platinum bob were major attention-getters, one couldn’t help but notice the model’s dark, heavy brows and smoked lids, with a touch of metallic silver in the inner corners to lighten up the look. It was a striking combination that sounds horribly overdone in writing, yet looks fresh and quite striking in the photo. Start with the same Gypsy instant eye shadow from the Metallics Variety Kit, but confine the deep mocha shimmer to the lid up into the crease, and the white from the crease up to the brow. Once again, dip a liner brush in the extra creamy mineral pigments remaining on the mylar cover sheet and line under the lower lashes with the deepest mocha shade. Then use a bit of our Smooth Arctic Silver Shimmer loose mineral pigment, a silvery white platinum, on the inner corners of the eye and down to just a bit below the lower lash line. Add mascara to the upper lashes only, and fill and groom the brows as needed. The rest of the face is bare but for a bit of concealer or foundation to perfect the complexion, which is also applied to the vermillion border of the lip to create an even base. You can also use one of the flesh-toned lip liners available. The lip is very precisely drawn and filled inside the vermillion border with a deeply pigmented satin-finish lipstick in a dark purple/berry. By leaving the cheeks essentially bare, the eyes and brows balance out the lips.

BEHNAZ SARAFPOUR: Here we have a strong brow, soft eye, strong lip combination. Iranian-born, Philadelphia-raised, Parson’s School of Design-educated Behnaz Sarafpour is a favorite of many thirty-something Hollywood celebs, who favor her dresses. For her Fall 2012 show in London, models wore matte shades of nude brown and beige on the eyes and a matte blue-based scarlet lip. To recreate a similar look, start with Ibiza from the Bestsellers or Eye Envy Smoky Variety Kits. Blend it down well on the inner third of the eye so that the application is very light, and smudge a bit of the deepest brown at the outer corner of the eye down just below the lower lash line. Curl your lashes, add black mascara to the top and bottom, and line the inner rims with black kohl. Groom and fill the brows, and use a bit of brow wax or clear mascara for some shine. A slight dusting of nude blush at the tops of the cheekbone out to the temples, and that statement lippie complete this sophisticated look. With a matte lipstick in such a strong color, be sure to use a nude lip liner and apply with a lip brush to get the most precise edge, blot, and apply another coat.

That’s a Wrap: Oscar Closes Awards Season with the Leg and the ‘Slip’ That Launched Their Own Twitter Accounts…and Some Sparkle and Smoke

Yes, the consensus was the 84thAnnual Academy Awards show was the usual snooze-fest. Don’t you think Eddie Murphy would have been a real game changer? You can thank uber-jerk Brett Ratner for the fossilized and strangely taut-faced Billy Crystal.

However, we did have the leg and the “wardrobe malfunction” that launched their very own Twitter accounts, courtesy of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez, respectively (#AngiesRightLeg and #JLoNipSlip). Trending topics aside, both ladies looked amazing (in their own way) at the Oscars. Here they are together; we’ll let you pick your favorite Twitter darling.

The Oscars are NOT the night when celebrities experiment with their look, with a few notable exceptions. For the most part, we saw more to talk about in the hair department than the makeup.

Viola Davis: The Best Actress nominee for “The Help” decided to abandon her wigs and appear with her natural, closely cropped hair, and she looked stunning!

The coppery shade, slightly darker that her own burnished skin tone, was beautifully complimented by her emerald Vera Wang strapless gown and a deeper, sparkling forest-green eyeliner. You could get the same look, depending on your skin tone, by starting with a shimmering base color like Bronze Goddess, a shimmery gold and glimmering deep brown that combine to create a rich bronzed look (from the Metallics Variety Kit), then heavily lining the upper and lower lash lines with a deep metallic green. Black mascara and black kohl liner on the inner rims complete the look. If your skin is a lighter tone, try coppers or golds instead of bronze as your base. It was very brave of Viola to step out on a night like this and reveal her natural beauty, to be herself without hiding behind a false image contrived by Hollywood; we hope it is the start of a trend toward women accentuating and accepting their beauty instead of working so hard to conform to an impossible standard.

Kristen Wiig: The “Bridesmaids” Best Original Screenplay nominee and star took some flak for her too-casual hairstyle (we thought it suited her comedic personality, the J. Mendel dress, and her Red Carpet style), but in a sea of updos and overdone looks, Kristen was refreshingly refined. Complementing her beachy waves and nude-only-better shirred tulle, her makeup was a palette of shimmery nudes. Start with ColorOn’s Gypsy, a gradient white and mocha metallic wash from the Eye Envy Precious Metals Variety Kit, and then add a bit of additional shimmer in the inner corners and below the lower lash line with Smooth Patina Silver Shimmer loose mineral pigment, which will bring out the cool shimmer base in Gypsy. Concentrate your mascara on the upper lashes with additional coats on the outer third, waiting for them to dry between coats; it will give you that heavy lidded, sexy look. A quick swipe on the lower lashes for balance, a swirl of the lightest bronzer, and a satiny nude lipstick with pink undertones and you’ll have the same shimmery-yet-natural look.

Penelope Cruz: We were talking about presenter Penelope Cruz’s hair, but not in the good way. Her faux bob was just the wrong length and made her look matronly instead of retro; and she has such gorgeously abundant long hair! But, her smoky eye makeup was timelessly sexy. Try Into Orbit,  a combination of pale brown sugar, mocha, dark chocolate, and milky chocolate layered across the eyelid to create a complex multi-tonal smoked eye, from the Eye Envy Odyssey Variety Kit. This look calls for a strong brow, so if yours are not as elegantly arched and extended as Penelope’s, be sure to fill them in. Curl your lashes, and take a fine eyeliner brush to the cover sheet to pick up the extra creamy mineral shadow left there, and draw a fine line below the lower lashes as close in as you can get. Use plenty of black mascara on the upper and lower lashes to achieve the same wide-open look. A touch of nude/pink blush swept toward the temples and a matte pinkish nude lipstick leave the eyes as the focal point.

Rose Byrne: Kristen Wiig’s “Bridesmaids” co-star has been working this iconic hairstyle all award season, and it’s grown on us as we remember its cinematic history: Uma Thurman in “Pulp Fiction,” Michelle Pfeiffer in “Scarface,” Julie Christie in “Shampoo,” Faye Dunaway in “Bonnie & Clyde”…all the way back to Cleopatra (or at least Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra). And it draws attention to her picture-perfect smoky eyes, done in the classic mode without shimmer, glitter, or embellishment (she left that to her fantastic Vivienne Westwood one-shouldered and sequined gown). Use Noche from ColorOn’s Eye Envy Smoky or Bestsellers Variety Kits, a seductive wash of black and deep grey shadows where Old Hollywood glamour meets today’s technology. Dip a fine eyeliner brush in the extra creamy mineral shadow left on the cover sheet and apply a super-fine line under the lower lashes at the outer half of the eyes, giving it a slight upward flick. Honorable mentions for “sparkle” go to George Clooney’s “plus one” Stacy Keibler, who was gold from head to toe – literally – including her eye makeup; Gwyneth Paltrow (she of the caped Tom Ford gown), who also wore shades of tawny golden eye makeup; and Viola Davis’s co-star from “The Help,” Jessica Chastain, whose shimmering rose gold and copper eye makeup picked up the intricate embroidery on her Alexander McQueen gown.

were all over the place); and one dishonorable mention to Cameron Diaz, whose black kohl eyeliner on just the inner rims, paired with her now platinum-white bob, shimmering pastel eye shadow, bright pink lipstick,  and strangely altered facial structure, was overly harsh and unflattering. She should have gone for a fully smoky eye, or stuck with the pastels (as fou-fou as they were); together they aged her terribly. Someone’s doing her a disservice, and getting paid for it.

That’s it for awards season — until Academy of Country Music Awards on April 1. That used to be more of a fashion disaster than a trend setter, but with the likes of Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, the Dixie Chicks, Lady Antebellum, Faith Hill, and others singing country music, it isn’t just big hair and sequins anymore. But we have plenty of time in between to follow up on London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks, the celebrities who sat front and center, and a Kardashian or two, should they do something interesting.
